What's Your Reason for Serving?

I received a couple comments that I want us to consider and reflect on, so they will form the foundation for our questions this week. The comments are, "...and when you follow what He tells you He would come back with a blessing..." and "Always do stuff for people and you will get stuff back, so trust it..." This leads us to our questions.

What is our reason for serving? And is it right to expect a reward for serving others?

  1. My reason for serving ... to live Jesus' message, and to live my message about Him. How can I say "God cares about you" when I don't?

Can I expect a blessing for my service? Yes. But usually not in the way I expect it.

  2. My reason for serving is simple... Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.Sound familar? Well it is the golden rule found in Matthew 7:12. I serve because Jesus calls me to serve and because I would like to be served sometimes too!

  3. Serving, to me, is about giving back. I give back to Jesus because of what he gave to me - his life as a living sacrifice and ransom for the debt of my sin. As an act of gratitude and love I serve those he leads me to serve. Not because I have to, but because I desire to. And because I believe it pleases Jesus to see me put aside selfish desires and to put the priorities of others before mine.

Finally, I believe that by serving others I am serving Jesus Himself. Jesus said, "whatever you have done for the least of these, you have done for me."

  4. I agree with Mr. Sweers, Lydia, and Steve on the reasons of why we serve. As for is it right to expect a reward from serving,I don't think it is right anything. Sometimes you will be called to serve, and people won't thank you for what you did, or they may even hate you for it. But...God does promise to reward us himself for what we have done (as Mr. Sweers said though, it may not come in the way we expect it to). Anyway, just a few quick thoughts to dwell on.
