Question of the Week #8

Why did God test Adam and Eve if He knew they were going to sin anyway (since God knows everything)?

Once again, this is another great question. Why would God give us a choice if He knew we were going to make the wrong decision? Why wouldn't He just set everything up just right so we would never mess up? I think these questions follow along the same line that are question of the week is on. Why is there choice?

My tendency for all these questions, including the past ones, is to give you the answers. However, I think it is more beneficial for you to discover the answers for yourself versus just being told what they are.

First off, the question implies that God tested Adam and Eve. However, was it God who tested them, or was it someone else? Maybe you want to read the Adam and Eve story again in Genesis to find out who was doing the testing.

I do agree that God allowed Adam and Eve to be tempted. Maybe the following verse can give you some insight into that.

1 Corinthians 10:12-13

Next, I want you to remember that we were created in the image of God (Genesis 1). If we were created in the image of God, then that must mean we have at least a few things in common. Why then do you think we have the ability to choose?

Also, would you call it love if a robot was programmed to "love" you? What makes love unique when it comes from a human being versus something like a robot?

After you're all done with that, I'd like to direct you to http://www.gotquestions.org/tree-knowledge-good-evil.html. I hope it helps. See you Wednesday!

Grace and Peace,

Patrick

  1. hello everyone!! well this Q is a good discussion so I won't say too much but I will say this, God wasn't the one who tested eve in the first place it was the serpent(satan) who tempted eve so that is all cleared up. Adam took the fruit from eve knowing he was sinning and wasn't tempted as much as eve was. Are you getting what I'm saying? well if you were tempted it was most likely satan or sometimes God would be trying to test you. In any circumstance we need to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord and please Him.

  2. First off, I want to say that God did not tempt Adam and Eve. Like we talked about before, God does not tempt us, but God allows us to be tempted by Satan. I can't prove it in the Bible, but my personal opinion is that maybe God had this event recorded in history for His people today to learn something from it. God already knew the choice Adam and Eve were going to make. Just my thoughts!

  3. i totally agree with kari and lydia, but there is one thing that i want to say; i am not asking (because i wrote the question) about the tempting part, but the test. really this is like a test because he (God) is seeing if they will obey him(God) or disobey. that would be like a test, or so i think. yes, satan did tempt them but they had a choice. Even though i did write the question i have some things to add: once i started thinking about it i thought it wouldn't be fair just to send adam and eve here with sin for no reason, but he let them choose so they could know why there was sin. And i must add hat it was part of Gods plan to have sin so people would have a better reason to trust God. if there was no sin people obviously would still trust God but not as much since everything was perfect and there would be nothing to worry about. since we do have sin there is things that we do have to trust God about. for example: right now practicly everyone is worried about the economy and people need to trust God more and believe that everything will be alright. this will bring people closer to God because they will be praying more and ya. i think i will leave it kind of off there because it is getting more and more off topic.

*just some things to think about.(some very long ideas, hehe)
