Question of the Week #6

Why is there an Old and New Testament?

Good question! It seems to me that many people who have grown up in the church usually never ask a question like this, because they were raised with it. They take what they grew up with for granted, and they never question or wrestle with why things are the way they are. And yet there are very important answers for these, seemingly, simple questions. The answer to why there is an Old and New Testament may be the most profound of all.

With this in mind, I'm not going to give you the answer. I think you will be able to discover this one for yourselves.

Consider the books of the bible, and then from what you know and remember see if you can list the major differences between the Old and New Testament. Which of these differences stand out above the rest? What significance is there in these differences for us as Christians? Was there always an Old and New Testament?

Maybe these questions will be helpful for you as you think about this week's question.

Grace and Peace,

Patrick

  1. Wow, this is a really good question and I guess I've never really thought about it before. But one thing that I know is that the Old Testament ( at least parts of it) prophesied about Jesus being born and in the New Testament, those prophesies were fulfilled. That's just one of the things I thought of!

  2. In between the testaments there was a 400 year span where God didn't talk to His people so no one recorded anything. The "silent years" as they are called, pretty much explains why we have 2 testaments. I also think that what Kari said is also very true about the prophecies of Jesus. I am looking forward to discussing this topic tonite, I can tell that this topic will make a good discussion. These are only a few of my thoughts. SEE YA!!!!!
