Why do people say, "Thank you for your blood" when it's not just His blood but His willingness to die on the cross (that saves us)? ...in reference to the song, "Jesus, It's Your Blood."
Great question for this week!
I tried finding the song titled, "Jesus it's your Blood." However, I was unable to come up with anything. I did find Matt Redman's song titled, "Nothing but the Blood," which I think might be the song that the question was referring to. Therefore, we'll go with those lyrics as we seek to answer this week's question. IF YOU DO FIND THE SONG LYRICS TO "JESUS IT'S YOUR BLOOD," THEN PLEASE POST THEM AND LET US KNOW. Thanks!
Also, I want to direct you towards the book of Hebrews, chapters 9 and 10 as you seek to answer this week's question. I found it very helpful. Check it out!
NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD
Your blood speaks a better word
Than all the empty claims
I’ve heard upon this earth
Speaks righteousness for me
And stands in my defense
Jesus it’s Your blood
[Chorus]
What can wash away our sins?
What can make us whole again?
Nothing but the blood
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can wash us pure as snow?
Welcomed as the friends of God
Nothing but Your blood
Nothing but Your blood King Jesus
Your cross testifies in grace
Tells of the Father’s heart to make a way for us
Now boldly we approach
Not by earthly confidence
It’s only Your blood
[Chorus]
We thank You for the blood
We thank You for the blood
We praise You for the blood
We praise You for the blood
Nothing but Your blood
Nothing but Your blood King Jesus
Hey Patrick! I found the site and it works!

I couldn't find a song with that title in easy worship. I dod know the other song that you posted, it's old school. Another song is running in my head but I haven't gotten it all yet.
ReplyDelete♥hey Patrick! i have have no idea about this question. but I'm going to take a stab at it. Hebrews 9&10 was very helpful. and i just thought about how back in Moses' day they sacrificed animals and Jesus said he was the spotless lamb and that he would be sacrifice just as Moses sacrificed his spotless lambs for his sins. so its not all about his blood but him as a sacrifice for our debt.♥

Here's another Matt Redman song that the question may refer to:
ReplyDeleteYour Blood speaks a better word
Than all the empty claims I've heard upon this earth
Speaks righteousness for me
And stands in my defence
Jesus, it's Your blood.
What can wash away our sins?
What can make us whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can wash us pure as snow
Welcomed as the friends of God?
Nothing but Your blood King Jesus.
Your cross testifies in grace
Tells of the Father's heart to make
a way for us
Now boldly we approach
Not earthly confidence
It's only by your blood.
Actually, that is the same song that I posted. Oh well, it's good to read again.
ReplyDeleteAnd by the way, Ellen, I think you're really on to something. Nice job!
I think God uses what we refer to as impacting 'mediums' (ways to communicate) to make as strong of an impression as He can on us. As important and impacting as it is, we cannot 'see' or 'touch' or 'smell' Jesus willingness to die for us. It takes awhile for us to get our mind quiet and reeally process what that means. But we immediately react to the thought of bloodshed - especially when we see it. Th Bible says that "the life is in the blood". It represents our very life - His life. It's a visable, emotional, impacting representation of what we can't see. Life.
ReplyDeleteImagine what it was like for a young person at Passover to watch his/her dad take a beautiful, unblemished yearling lamb and slit its throat and watch it 'bleed out'. That leavesa a much more emotional impression than just saying "a lamb died today". That's what Jesus did on the cross. The innocent, unblemished Lamb of God bled out - as the payment for sin for all mankind. For me.
"Oh, the blood of Jesus - it made me white as sonow."
The story of the last plague (of the 10 plagues in Exodus 11 and 12) is also interesting. God said he was going to kill EVERY 1st born son....unless the family killed a perfect lamb (without defect) and spread the blood over the door of their house.
ReplyDeleteWhen the death angel came, he PASSED OVER every house with blood over the door, but killed the oldest boy in every other house.
What does that story represent?
What does blood symbolize?
What does it all mean to US??
dort
Great thought Ellen. I like it.
ReplyDeleteWhy do think God chose the idea of blood to have to do with forgiveness?
Hey everyone! Here are some helpful verses I found. Ellen, I was going to say exactly what you said! you beat me to it! I think what the song is trying to get at is the Jesus' blood is a symbol to us that he died for us. His blood did not literally save us but that is a symbol for us.
ReplyDeleteHebrews 9:15- For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.
Hebrews 9:20- 22 He said, "This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep. In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Ephesians 2:13
But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.
Hebrews 13:12
So also Jesus suffered and died outside the city gates to make his people holy by means of his own blood.

Here's another thought...
ReplyDelete"God is Spirit ..." I don't think a spirit has blood.
"Angels are ministering spirits ..." I don't think angels have blood (or demons).
So, perhaps the deeper significance of Jesus' blood is the reality of His humanity. Adam (the first man)got us into this mess, it would take another man to redeem and restore us (1 Cor. 15:45-49). Not JUST a spirit, and certainly not a created angel, but a MAN, a God-Man. God had to die in order for humanity to realize our inheritance (Hebrews 9:17). But God had to have blood, man-life, in order to accomplish this. The shed blood of Jesus is the evidence that a God-Man died, and the inheritance became available to all whose names are written in His last will and testament (the Book of Life?). The good news is that the God-Man rose from the dead and now is the executor of His own will!
His Name is Jesus.
We're here.

Hebrews 9:22 says: In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. We are thanking Jesus for his blood becuase as it says in The Bible we cannot be saved without the shedding of blood. When I sing a song that says things like "Jesus, thank you for your blood" I think about it like I am saying thank you to God for sending your son and I am also thanking him for everything he did on Earth, and for shedding his blood. When the person who wrote this song was writng it I beleive that they were thanking God for more than just the blood of Jesus, but for everything that God has done for us, for sending his son to die for us, and for Jesus willingness to die on the cross.

Here are some other verses that talk about how there must be shedding of blood to have forgiveness:
Matthew 26:28
"This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."
Ephesians 1:7
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace.
Hebrews 9:22 says: In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. When we sing this song we are thanking Jesus for both his willingness to die on the cross, and most importantly, his shedding of blood. When I sing this song (and I believe whoever wrote this song meant it this way, too) I think about more than just Jesus shedding his blood. I think about everything God has done for us, Jesus coming to Earth, HIS WILLINGNESS TO DIE FOR US, and I also think about what the song specifically says. I believe that they do not specifically talk about Jesus' willingness to die on the cross in this song is becuase they want you to think about what the song really means. If you really think on this you should find that when Jesus shed his blood he willingly gave up his life.
