My mom had my sister when she was 16, and she wasn't married. She still wasn't married until after she had three more children but then died of a heart attack. Is that wrong? Is it wrong to have a child if she wasn't married?
Wow! What a loaded question! I want to first thank the person who asked this question for sharing a bit of his/her personal life with us. That's not always easy. Few are brave enough to open up like that, so I commend this person. Thank you!
The bible clearly states that fornication and adultery are wrong. There is no getting around it.
What are fornication and adultery? Basically, fornication is sex outside of marriage. Adultery, more specifically, is when somebody who is married has sex with someone who is not their husband or wife.
Here are some passages in the bible that speak on this issue:
Exodus 20 (specifically verse 14)
Matthew 5:27-30
John 8:1-11 (Look how Jesus responds!)
Ephesians 5:1-21 (look especially at verse 3)
1 Thessalonians 4:1-8
As we can see from the bible, it was wrong to have premarital relations and have children before marriage. Does that mean there couldn't be redemption? By no means! Look at Jesus' response in John 8 to the woman caught in adultery.
God gives us opportunity to turn from our sin and run to Jesus. Do people always take this opportunity? Sadly, most do not. Did this mother turn her life over to Jesus while she was still alive? I do not know. Once somebody dies, it is final. There is nothing we can do to try and influence or pray for that person once they are gone(You may want to look into Luke 16:19-31 where Jesus tells us a sobering story). That is why it is so important for us to use wisely the time we are given while we are still alive. We are not guaranteed tomorrow (James 4:13-17), so let us make the most of today!
Some might ask, "Why is adultery or fornication so wrong, especially if two people really love each other?" Simply, I would say that first of all, the God of the universe said it was wrong. But second of all and maybe most importantly, I believe adultery and fornication, along with every other evil that God said was wrong, is contrary to the very nature and character of God. That is why it is evil. He can't stand anything that is contrary to His nature.
I hope this was helpful and gets you thinking! Thank you to all of you who check the blog and leave your comments. It makes it worth while.
May you find Truth in Him!
Grace and Peace!
I agree with patrick. i havn't looked up anything in the bible yet, but i can't right now because (well im suppose to be doing my homework but i am too bored,... opps). but about the quetion i know that it is wrong to have children before you are married, which is a sin. i know that in Gods eyes, all sin are eqal( however you spell it). so if all sins are equl then having a child(ren) is eqal to any other sin like lying and stuff. i do believe that whoevers quetion this, yes your mom had excepted Christ as their savoir they are going to heaven. to this person, i just want to tell them that even tho your mom did die and i know that that would be a huge part of their life, you should not worry about it too much. in heaven there will be much grater things and you wont even relize or care that your mom isnt there ( not to hurt your feelings).

All of the verses Patrick recommened are a great help! Here are some others that I found that may be helpful.

Hebrews 13:4
1 Thessalonians 4:3-4
1 Corinthians 10:13
Just some thoughts! Also, this person shared with us on Wednesday that her other question was would her mom go to heaven or hell? God says in the Bible he can forgive any stain (sin) no matter how deep (Acts 13:38-39). We don't know if this girl's mom was a Christian or not, but if she was, I think that she would still go to heaven. However if she wasn't, she obviously would NOT go to heaven. Think about these things!

Something else to consider - yes, it is wrong for the woman to have sex outside of marriage; it is not what God wants and it breaks His heart to see His children living outside of His design. Many women have sex and get pregnant outside of marriage, but have abortions before anyone finds out. This is murder.
ReplyDeleteSo praise God for her decision to give birth to her babies.
The Bible teaches that there are consequences to sin. David committed adultry with Bathsheba which led to murder (2 Samuel 11). Then David hardened his heart toward God, so God had to send a prophet to convict him (2 Samuel 12). David fell on his face and repented before God, and God forgave David (vs. 13). But there were still consequences. David's sin brought trouble on his household for years to come. God still loved David, and God established David's throne forever through Christ.
ReplyDeleteHebrews tells us we have a better covenant than David did - better promises, and a better sacrifice (Jesus' blood). If God could forgive David for adultry and even murder under the old covenant, then surely He can forgive it under the New and better Covenant we have in Christ. BUT ... the lesson is that there are still consequences for sin - even in the life of believers. That's why God hates sin so much - it messes up so many lives.
Jenny, I'm so glad you mentioned abortion! I was going to say something about it when i commmented, but I forgot. There is a verse in the Bible in Genisis 9:5 that say simply this, " Murder is forbidden." If you are interested to see what else God has to say about abortion here are some verses.

Since, I don't know whether adultery was commited, and I don't want to assume,I have a few different answers. First is God does everything for a reason. So maybe in this case He was trying to teach this person a lesson. Maybe God didn't intend for this to help at that present time, but now it can teach more and more people about how wrong it is. I also want to commend this person for such a great question.
